As an Estes Park wedding photographer it’s one of my favorite places to show up for work. Estes Park sits right at the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, which means you’re not just getting married in Colorado, you’re getting married with Longs Peak, the Continental Divide, and Lumpy Ridge as your backdrop. Black Canyon Inn sits tucked between a granite ridge and the open space of MacGregor Ranch, about half a mile from downtown but feeling like a secluded celebration. It’s one of those venues where the setting does a lot of the work and the rest of the day just falls into place around it.
Eric and Rhonda’s day started, just up the road, at the Stanley Hotel. If you know anything about the Stanley you know it’s iconic and was such a fun place for their getting ready and first look.
Black Canyon Inn sits in a spot that feels tucked away from everything, which is part of what makes it work so well as a wedding venue. There’s a natural intimacy to it even when the guest list is full. The ceremony space, the reception flow, the way the venue sits against the landscape, it all comes together in a way that feels intentional without being fussy.
Eric and Rhonda brought details. Everything from the stunning florals, and table settings to the beautiful cake and photo booth. It was one of those weddings where you could feel the planning behind it, but none of it got in the way of the day actually happening. That balance is harder to pull off than it looks and they nailed it.
When a ceremony includes personal vows, you can bet I’m wiping away some tears behind the camera. They were so sweet and full of fun personal details and inside jokes that had everyone laugh crying but feeling the love Eric and Rhonda had for each other.
The light in Estes Park during golden hour is pure Colorado. It’s warm, wide open, and completely unfiltered. We headed out for sunset portraits and the mountains did exactly what you’d hope. There’s something about that particular combination of altitude, open sky, and late afternoon sun that makes every frame feel like Colorado. It’s one of my favorite places to shoot as an Estes Park wedding photographer and this evening was a good reminder of why.
By the time the reception hit its stride, the night had its own momentum. Eric and Rhonda’s people were there to celebrate and once open dancing started it didn’t slow down. A packed dance floor full of friends who were genuinely happy to be there, those are always the photos I love most from a wedding night. Nobody performing for the camera, just everyone fully present and having a blast.
It was a full day in the best sense. Great venue, great light, great people. Estes Park keeps earning its spot on my list of favorite places to shoot and Black Canyon Inn is a big part of why.
